Changyul Park: A Royal Gift to Thimphu’s Urban Transformation

Found Bhutan, 9th Sep, 2024

Changyul Park, a magnificent addition to Thimphu’s cityscape, stretches across seven (7) acres along the Wangchhu River Corridor. Officially inaugurated on August 23, 2024, by His Majesty the King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and members of the Royal Family, the park is a shining example of Bhutan’s sustainable urban development and a symbol of the nation's vision for a greener future.

What was once a truck park is now a vibrant seven-acre oasis that blends tradition, innovation, and environmental stewardship. The project initially began in February 2023 and costed almost over 150 million Ngultrums (BTN). The Park is a gift from His Majesty the King to the people of Bhutan and visitors from around the world.

This park is not just a green space; it reflects a perfect blend of Bhutanese culture, architectural elegance, and environmental sustainability. While Bhutan is already renowned for its rich flora and fauna, this urban park stands apart by combining modern techniques with Bhutanese traditional elements. The park offers something for everyone: a playful escape for children, scenic lawns for picnics, peaceful gardens for nature lovers, social centers for gathering, and fitness facilities for the health-conscious.

So, whether you’re a resident of Thimphu or a visitor exploring the capital, this park is a must-visit. It’s a place to connect with the people, nature, and the evolving spirit of Bhutan.

A Space for the Community

At the heart of Changyul Park is its emphasis on creating spaces for social engagement. Designed to honor Bhutanese traditions while incorporating modern infrastructure, the park features:

  • Community Hub: A central gathering spot equipped with a cafeteria, outdoor deck, and performance plaza. It’s the perfect place to host events, community activities, or simply enjoy a coffee while soaking in the park’s serene atmosphere.
  • Nature-Inspired Play Area: Families can take advantage of a unique, nature-based play space with fun structures like spider webs and rope bridges for children. For the adults, the outdoor gym offers fitness stations that promote an active lifestyle.

Embracing Nature and Tranquility

One of the park’s most picturesque features is its tranquil green spaces. From the expansive lawns of the Northern Meadows to the peaceful Riverside Gallery, Changyul Park offers plenty of areas where you can relax and enjoy the natural surroundings:

  • Northern Meadows: Expansive, utility-equipped lawns ideal for picnics, family gatherings, and events.
  • Riverside Gallery: A peaceful corner of the park where visitors can sit and enjoy views of the Wangchhu River.
  • Rose Garden and Arboretum: Featuring Thimphu’s largest rose garden and an arboretum showcasing over 50 native plant species, these gardens are perfect for nature lovers. With stunning views of landmarks such as the Bazam and Talakha, it’s a photographer’s paradise.

Connecting People with Nature and Fitness

Changyul Park’s design ensures visitors can fully immerse themselves in nature while staying active:

  • Jogging and Walking Trails: A one-kilometer loop of walking paths and jogging tracks connects various sections of the park, offering beautiful views while promoting fitness.
  • Elevated Boardwalk and Floating Bar: Stroll along the arc-shaped boardwalk to the Floating Bar, a cozy venue built using intricate Bhutanese timber techniques. Here, visitors can unwind with views of the Wangchhu River, making it a perfect spot for relaxation.

Sustainable Design for a Greener Future

Changyul Park exemplifies Bhutan’s commitment to sustainability. The park integrates energy-efficient lighting, cleverly embedded into natural rock features and lampposts that add to the aesthetic appeal. Additionally, a Mini Mobility Hub includes electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, public parking, and bus stops, aligning with Thimphu’s low-emission transport network and promoting greener mobility.

A Model for Future Urban Spaces

As part of Thimphu’s Green Infrastructure and Open Space Master Plan (2023-2047), Changyul Park is setting new standards for urban green spaces in Bhutan. It not only supports the professional development of local architects, engineers, and skilled youth but also contributes to the city’s environmental goals by promoting carbon sequestration and sustainable infrastructure.

Conclusion

Changyul Park is more than just a green space—it's a vibrant community hub that offers something for everyone, from peaceful riverside walks and fitness trails to family-friendly play areas and cultural gatherings. With sustainable features like EV charging stations, eco-friendly lighting, and seamless integration into Thimphu’s low-emission transport network, the park not only honors Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage but also embraces a forward-thinking approach to urban development. Whether you're looking to relax, engage with the local community, or simply enjoy the natural beauty of Bhutan, Changyul Park is an unmissable destination in the heart of Thimphu.
