The Dagala Trek — widely known as the Thousand Lakes Trek — is a 4-day moderate alpine adventure set entirely within the Thimphu district. Starting from Genekha village at around 2,800 m and finishing at Chamgang near Thimphu, the approximately 50-kilometre route crosses four mountain passes, one of which exceeds 4,500 m. It is widely regarded as an ideal introduction to high-altitude alpine trekking in Bhutan.

The central attraction is the extraordinary collection of pristine, crystal-clear glacial lakes scattered across the Dagala massif — from small shimmering tarns to larger lakes perfect for fishing. A dedicated day of the trek is spent looping among the lakes: ten distinct bodies of water in varying sizes, each set in a landscape of raw, windswept beauty at high altitude.

Beyond the lakes, the trek delivers one of the most expansive Himalayan panoramas available on any short trek in Bhutan. From the 4,520 m viewpoint on Day 3, on a clear day you can see Mt. Everest in Nepal, Mt. Kanchenjunga in Sikkim, and a full sweep of Bhutan's own giants including Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Masang Gang, Tsende Gang, Khangbum, and Gangche Ta.

Six Reasons to Trek
Dagala

A Thousand Glacial Lakes

The Dagala region is famous for its stunning collection of alpine lakes — crystal-clear, pristine, and set at high altitude among open meadows and rocky ridgelines. A full day is devoted to looping among ten lakes of varying sizes, offering fishing, photography, and peaceful exploration.

Sweeping Himalayan Panoramas

From the high point on Day 3 at 4,520 m, on clear days you can see all the way to Mt. Everest and Kanchenjunga — as well as a full row of Bhutan's iconic peaks: Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Masang Gang, Gangche Ta, and more. Few short treks in the world offer this breadth of view.

Ideal Alpine Introduction

With four high passes (one over 4,500 m) and a moderate difficulty rating, the Dagala Trek is the perfect first alpine trekking experience in Bhutan. It challenges you just enough to feel the altitude while remaining accessible to fit travellers without prior Himalayan experience.

Thimphu's Wild Backyard

The Dagala Trek starts and ends near Bhutan's capital, making it uniquely accessible. Trek through the wild alpine zone above Thimphu and return to the city within four days — combining adventure and cultural exploration in a single seamless journey.

Yak Herder Villages & Pastures

The trail passes through seasonal yak herder encampments and traditional pastoral villages. Meeting herders at altitude, understanding their nomadic rhythms, and sharing the landscape with grazing yaks is an irreplaceable dimension of the Dagala experience.

Blue Poppy & Mountain Birds

In June and July, the high meadows bloom with Bhutan's national flower — the rare blue poppy. The trek is also exceptional for mountain birdwatching: alpine species abound along the ridgelines and around the lakes throughout the spring and autumn trekking seasons.

Best Time to Trek

Spring (April–June): The optimal season. Rhododendrons bloom along the lower sections, blue poppies appear in June near the passes, mountain birdlife is most active, and weather is reliably pleasant. April and May offer the clearest Himalayan views before the pre-monsoon haze builds.

Autumn (September–October): The second best season. Post-monsoon clarity offers exceptional views of the Himalayan peaks from the high passes. Daytime conditions are comfortable, though nights at altitude are cold. September is ideal for stable weather and vibrant autumn colours.

Low Season (Dec–Feb & Jun–Aug): December to February can be very cold with frozen lakes and snow at passes. June to August is the monsoon — possible but trails are wet and views are often obscured.

Itinerary

At Found Bhutan Tours and Treks, we do not take our guests on a virtual tour before arriving in Bhutan. We want our guests to fully explore and experience Bhutan first-hand. Therefore, we keep our itinerary short and less descriptive.
Total Distance ~50 km
Trek Style Fully Supported Camping
Passes Crossed 4 Passes
Group Size 1–12 People

All meals on trek are freshly prepared by your camp cook. Each morning begins with a wake-up call, warm washing water, and tea or coffee at your tent. Trekking begins around 8:30–9 am at a comfortable pace, with a packed lunch eaten on trail. Camp is fully set up and ready on arrival each afternoon. Pack horses carry all equipment and supplies — you trek with only a day pack.

Start Elevation ~2,800 m
Camp Elevation ~4,250 m
Distance ~18 km
Trek Time 7–9 hours

Your adventure begins in Genekha village above Thimphu, where the trail descends briefly toward the river before crossing and beginning a sustained ascent. The path climbs steadily through forest and into open alpine terrain, passing a large rock platform with a fine view of the Thimphu valley. After approximately two more hours, the trail reaches Gur — an open expanse of yak pasture just below the main ridge. The first pass, Pagalabtsa (approximately 4,200 m), is crossed before the descent to the Labatama campsite. This is the longest and most demanding day of the trek. Settle into camp as the high-altitude evening settles across the meadows.

This is the hardest day of the trek. A strong start in the morning is recommended. The altitude gain from 2,800 m to 4,250 m is significant — take your time and drink plenty of water.
Camp Elevation ~4,250 m
Lakes Visited 10 Lakes
Distance Gentle Loop
Trek Time 3–5 hours

Today is the heart of the Dagala Trek — the day the route earns its name. From the Labatama campsite, a circular trail loops among ten pristine alpine lakes of varying sizes, each set in a landscape of remarkable stillness and clarity. The lakes are crystal-clear at this altitude, reflecting the surrounding ridgelines and sky. This is the day for photography, quiet exploration, fishing, and simply absorbing the extraordinary high-altitude surroundings. There is no rush — enjoy the day at your own pace.

Fishing is permitted in the Dagala lakes. Your guide can advise on spots. Blue sky days produce spectacular reflections on the water surface — mornings tend to be clearest before afternoon clouds build.
High Point 4,520 m (Dala Tsho saddle)
Camp Elevation ~4,000 m
Distance ~9 km
Trek Time 4–6 hours

Today's trail ascends the western side of Dala Tsho to reach the high point of the trek at approximately 4,520 m — the saddle above the lake. From this viewpoint, on a clear morning, the panorama is extraordinary: Mt. Everest in Nepal, Mt. Kanchenjunga in Sikkim, and a full row of Bhutanese Himalayan giants including Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tshering Gang, Khangbum, Masang Gang, Tsende Gang, and Gangche Ta. For those who wish, an optional nearby peak at 4,720 m offers an even more elevated perspective. After descending from the saddle, the trail passes yak herder huts and follows the Doccha Chhu river through a series of ascents and descents before reaching Pangkha camp at around 4,000 m. Cross the Labajong pass (approximately 4,500 m) en route.

For the best Himalayan panorama, reach the Dala Tsho saddle early in the morning before clouds build. The optional 4,720 m peak adds approximately 1 hour and is recommended for fit trekkers.
Start Elevation ~4,000 m
Trail End ~2,750 m
Distance ~17 km
Trek Time 7–8 hours

The final day traverses multiple passes with no significant uphill climbs — a satisfying descent to conclude the trek. Keep a close eye along the ridgeline for Bhutan's national flower, the rare blue poppy, particularly visible in June and July. Mountain birds are plentiful across the open alpine sections. After crossing the final pass, Tale La at approximately 4,180 m, the trail makes a sustained descent to Talakha Gompa — a beautiful monastery perched on the hillside above Thimphu. Your campsite is positioned beside the monastery, offering a unique opportunity to wake to the sound of morning prayers. From here, there is also a fine panoramic view of Thimphu city far below. A vehicle transfers you back to Thimphu to conclude the trek.

If spending the final night beside Talakha Monastery, the early morning prayers of the resident monks are a genuinely moving way to end the trek — set your alarm for 6 am.
