5 Days / 4 Nights Wholly Bhutanese-Owned National Geographic Unique Lodge

Overview

Updated July 2026

The Only Bhutanese-Owned Luxury Hotel

Every other property on our luxury roster is an international brand, or a chain with Bhutanese operations. Zhiwa Ling Heritage is the exception — wholly owned and staffed by Bhutanese people, envisioned by a local businessman and hand-built over three years by more than 60 local artisans. It's a genuinely different kind of luxury: not imported hospitality standards applied to a Bhutanese setting, but a Bhutanese vision of luxury from the ground up.

Set on 10-12 acres in the Paro Valley, within walking distance of the Tiger's Nest trailhead, Zhiwa Ling is one of National Geographic's Unique Lodges of the World — and its 45 suites include a temple built from 450-year-old timbers salvaged from Gangtey Monastery.

The Property

Why Bhutanese-Owned Matters

🇧🇹

A Bhutanese Vision, Not an Import

Every other luxury property in the country is an international brand or conglomerate. Zhiwa Ling is Bhutanese hospitality built from the ground up.

🪵

Hand-Built by 60 Local Artisans

Three years of construction, intricate hand-painted murals, and hand-carved woodwork throughout — genuine craftsmanship, not decor.

🥾

Steps from the Tiger's Nest Trailhead

One of the shortest transfers to the trailhead of any luxury property in Paro — a genuine practical edge on hike day.

🎓

Staffed Through Its Own Training Programme

Many staff are trained through the property's own hospitality diploma programme — supporting the local economy directly, not just employing locally.

The Itinerary

Day by Day

1

Arrive Paro, Transfer to Zhiwa Ling Heritage

Paro Airport → Zhiwa Ling Heritage (≈15 min)
Transfer ~15 minutes
Pace Arrival day

One of the shortest airport transfers of any luxury property in Bhutan — Zhiwa Ling sits just outside Paro town. The lobby alone is worth the arrival: intricate hand-painted murals and vibrantly hand-carved woodwork, a tribute to the artistic heritage the hotel was purpose-built to celebrate. Afternoon at leisure, exploring the 10-acre grounds or the on-site tea house. Overnight at Zhiwa Ling Heritage.

Ask to see the second-floor Buddhist temple, built with 450-year-old timbers salvaged from Gangtey Monastery — it's not always mentioned to guests unless they ask.
2

Paro Sightseeing

Paro — full day, low travel time
Pace Full sightseeing day
Highlight Rinpung Dzong

Rinpung Dzong, Kyichu Lhakhang (one of Bhutan's oldest temples, dating to the 7th century), and Ta Dzong, the national museum, are all a short drive from the hotel. Return in the afternoon for a traditional Bhutanese tea ceremony in Zhiwa Ling's tea house, where guests actively churn their own butter tea in the traditional style. Overnight at Zhiwa Ling Heritage.

3

Thimphu Day Trip

Zhiwa Ling → Thimphu → Zhiwa Ling (≈1 hr each way)
Drive Time ~1 hour each way
Pace Full sightseeing day

Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma statue, and the National Memorial Chorten in the capital, with a return to Paro in the evening. At Zhiwa Ling's Menlha Spa, treatment rooms are each dedicated to an aspect of Tara, the venerated female deity representing compassion, healing, and wisdom — a detail that reflects how thoroughly Bhutanese heritage is woven into the property, not layered on top of it. Overnight at Zhiwa Ling Heritage.

4

Tiger's Nest Hike

Paro Taktsang hike (4–5 hrs round trip)
Hike Time 4–5 hrs round trip
Trailhead Distance A stone's throw from the hotel

Zhiwa Ling's location near the Tiger's Nest trailhead is a genuine advantage on this day — a shorter transfer than from most other Paro properties. The hike to Paro Taktsang clings to a cliff 900 metres above the valley floor; a teahouse roughly halfway offers the first full view across the gorge. Return to the hotel for a Menlha Spa treatment and time in the indoor heated pool. Overnight at Zhiwa Ling Heritage.

The meditation house on the property overlooks the Tiger's Nest ridge directly — worth a sunrise visit the morning of the hike, before you set out.
5

Departure

Transfer to Paro International Airport
Transfer ~15 minutes
Pace Free morning, then transfer

A final morning in the gardens, or a last visit to the on-site shop for handwoven Bhutanese textiles and handcrafted jewellery made by local craftswomen. Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.
