Bhutan is one of the last truly unexplored sport fishing paradises on earth. Its centuries of limited exposure to the outside world, combined with strict conservation laws and a constitutional commitment to environmental protection, have preserved river ecosystems of extraordinary purity and productivity. With approximately 40 fish species identified and new discoveries still being made each year, Bhutan's rivers represent a frontier that is only just beginning to be understood by the fishing world.

This 7-day fly fishing tour visits three distinct river systems — the Wang Chhu in Thimphu, the Paro Chhu in Paro valley, and the Haa Chhu in the remote and recently-opened Haa valley — spanning elevations from 1,200 m to 3,000 m. The primary target species are snow trout (Schizothorax spp.), a powerful carp-family member perfectly adapted to cold, fast-flowing mountain rivers, and brown trout (Salmo trutta), introduced several decades ago and now thriving in Bhutan's high-elevation streams. Both species offer exceptional sport on a fly rod.

The tour is structured as a genuine blend of angling and cultural immersion. When the rivers are rested or the light is wrong, Bhutan's extraordinary cultural landscape fills the programme — Thimphu's temples and dzongs, Paro's National Museum, Tiger's Nest Monastery, and the timeless Haa valley all feature. A traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho) is the perfect conclusion to days on cold mountain rivers.

Six Reasons Bhutan is
an Angler's Dream

Pristine, Unpressured Rivers

Bhutan's rivers are among the cleanest and least-fished in all of Asia. No industrial pollution, no intensive agriculture, no overfishing — the Wang Chhu, Paro Chhu, and Haa Chhu flow from glacial sources through protected forests with virtually no disturbance. This is what rivers looked like before the modern world arrived.

Snow Trout — A Unique Species

Snow trout (Schizothorax spp.) are found only in Himalayan river systems and are unlike any species most visiting anglers will have encountered. They are powerful, fast-running fish superbly adapted to cold, turbulent water — and on a fly rod in a mountain river, they offer sport that rivals brown trout anywhere in the world.

The Most Beautiful Fishing Backdrop on Earth

You will fish with dzongs visible on the ridgelines above you, prayer flags strung between pine trees on the bank, and the Himalayan peaks forming the skyline. Bhutan's rivers are not just excellent fishing — they are set within some of the most visually extraordinary landscapes available to any travelling angler.

Culture Between the Casts

Fishing in Bhutan happens inside one of the world's most remarkable living cultures. Between sessions on the river you visit the National Memorial Chorten, Buddha Dordenma, Paro Dzong, the National Museum, and Tiger's Nest Monastery — experiences that place your angling adventure inside a much larger story.

Conservation Ethos — Catch & Release

Bhutan's Buddhist heritage makes it uniquely sympathetic to catch and release fishing. The kingdom's ethos of environmental protection and reverence for all life means that fishing here carries none of the ethical ambivalence it might elsewhere — every fish returned to the river is an act of respect consistent with Bhutanese values.

Hot Stone Bath After the River

After days wading cold mountain rivers, few experiences come close to a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho) — river stones heated in a wood fire and placed in the bathwater until it reaches the perfect temperature. It is genuinely therapeutic and quintessentially Bhutanese. This tour includes it on Day 6.

Best Fishing Season

Spring (March–May): The prime fishing season. Water temperatures rise steadily from March through May, increasing fish activity. Snow trout are highly active and aggressive in April–May as spawning season approaches. River levels are manageable and the surrounding landscape is spectacular with rhododendron bloom.

Autumn (September–November): The second best season. Post-monsoon water clarity is outstanding — rivers run clear and cold after the rains, and fish are feeding actively ahead of winter. October and November are particularly productive for brown trout in the higher-elevation streams around Haa.

Low Season (Dec–Feb & Jun–Aug): Winter (December–February) brings slower fishing as water temperatures drop and fish become lethargic. Monsoon season (June–August) raises river levels and reduces water clarity — possible but not ideal. Spring and autumn offer the most consistently productive conditions.

Itinerary

At Found Bhutan Tours and Treks, we do not take our guests on a virtual tour before arriving in Bhutan. We want our guests to fully explore and experience Bhutan first-hand. Therefore, we keep our itinerary short and less descriptive.

Approach Catch & Release

All fishing is done on a strict catch and release basis in keeping with Bhutan's conservation ethos. Fishing permits are obtained through Found Bhutan and are included in the tour cost. The tour uses a fully equipped private vehicle throughout. Rods and reels can be arranged on request — please indicate when booking. All accommodation, meals, cultural site entry fees, and guiding are included.

Day Type Arrival & Sightseeing
Altitude 2,320 m (Thimphu)
Accommodation Hotel in Thimphu
Fishing None (Arrival Day)

Arrive at Paro International Airport — one of the most dramatic mountain approaches in aviation, the aircraft weaving between Himalayan peaks before touching down in the valley. Your Found Bhutan guide meets you at the exit gates and transfers you to Thimphu (approximately 1 hour). After lunch, explore two of the capital's most iconic landmarks: the National Memorial Chorten — a striking golden stupa built as a tribute to the late third king Jigme Dorji Wangchuck — and the Buddha Dordenma, a 51-metre gilded bronze Buddha statue perched on a hilltop with sweeping views of the Thimphu valley below. Check in to your hotel and rest ahead of your first day on the river tomorrow. Overnight in Thimphu.

River Wang Chhu (Wang River)
Target Species Snow Trout · Catfish
Altitude ~2,300 m
Accommodation Hotel in Thimphu

Your first day on Bhutanese water. After breakfast, drive to the chosen fishing stretch of the Wang Chhu — the river that flows through Thimphu valley, fed by glacial meltwater from the high peaks to the north. With the right flies and approach, you can expect snow trout, various catfish species, and the possibility of brown trout in the cooler upper stretches. Bhutan's Buddhist heritage makes fishing a peaceful and welcomed pursuit here, and the riverside setting — forested banks, granite boulders, and prayer flags on the bridges above — is unmatched for atmosphere. Optional evening city sightseeing in Thimphu if the group wishes. Overnight in Thimphu.

Snow trout (Schizothorax spp.) are Bhutan's native flagship fish species. They inhabit fast-running, well-oxygenated mountain rivers and hit flies aggressively when actively feeding. Nymph patterns and small wet flies are most effective on the Wang Chhu.
River Paro Chhu (Paro River)
Target Species Snow Trout · Brown Trout
Altitude ~2,200 m (Paro)
Accommodation Hotel in Paro

After an early breakfast, choose to fish the Wang Chhu for a final morning session or head directly to Paro. The Paro Chhu is a classic Himalayan river — clear, cold, and fast-flowing — and offers some of the finest snow trout fishing in western Bhutan, along with brown trout in the higher-gradient sections upstream. After fishing, explore Paro town: visit the National Museum of Paro (housed in the ancient Ta Dzong watchtower and exhibiting Bhutanese religious art and artefacts), and Rinpung Dzong — the 17th-century fortress-monastery overlooking the river, reached by a traditional cantilever wooden bridge. Overnight in Paro.

The Paro Chhu is particularly productive in the early morning before 10 am and in the evening from 4 pm onward — plan your cultural visits in the middle of the day and fish the golden hours.
Route Via Chele-la Pass 3,890 m
River Haa Chhu (Haa River)
Target Species Brown Trout · Catla
Accommodation Hotel in Haa

Drive from Paro to Haa valley via the spectacular Chele-la Pass at 3,890 m — one of Bhutan's highest motorable passes. The option for a short hike at the pass allows the group to take in the panoramic alpine views, with nearby Kila Gonpa Nunnery visible on the steep forested hillside below. Descend to Haa valley — a remote valley that only opened to tourists in 2002 and remains one of Bhutan's most authentic and peaceful destinations. Evening fishing session on the Haa Chhu river, where brown trout and catla inhabit the crystal-clear pools. Explore the charming town of Haa. Overnight in Haa.

The Haa Chhu is Bhutan's least-fished significant river. Brown trout here are largely naive and respond well to dry fly presentations in the slower pool sections. Evening hatches in summer and autumn can produce memorable surface feeding activity.
Morning Haa Chhu Fishing
Afternoon Paro Sightseeing
Highlight Cantilever Bridge Walk
Accommodation Hotel in Paro

A final morning session on the Haa Chhu before the drive back to Paro. Picnic lunch on the riverside before departing. On arrival in Paro, visit the town's cultural highlights: the National Museum with its collection of Bhutanese religious artefacts and thangka paintings, Rinpung Dzong itself, and the picturesque traditional cantilever wooden bridge spanning the Paro river — a perfect spot to watch the evening current and reflect on days well spent on Bhutanese water. Overnight in Paro.

Day Type Hike & Cultural Visit
Hike Time 5–6 hours round trip
Altitude Taktsang · 3,120 m
Evening Traditional Hot Stone Bath

The defining non-fishing day of the tour. The hike to Paro Taktsang (Tiger's Nest Monastery) begins at Satsam Chorten below the cliff — the trail climbing through pine forest draped in Spanish moss, past prayer flag groves, to the monastery complex clinging to a sheer 900 m rock face. This is one of the most remarkable sacred buildings in the Buddhist world, built around the cave where Guru Rinpoche meditated for three months in the 8th century. All four temple chapels can be visited. In the afternoon — after the exertion of the hike and days in cold mountain rivers — enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath (Dotsho): river stones heated in a wood fire and placed in the bathwater until it reaches a deep, penetrating heat. One of the most therapeutic experiences available in Bhutan. Overnight in Paro.

Book the hot stone bath in advance through your guide — arrange it for late afternoon so it is ready when you return from Tiger's Nest. The combination of a full day hike and an evening Dotsho is one of the finest days Bhutan offers any visitor.
Day Type Departure Day
Transfer Hotel → Paro Airport
Last Morning Optional River Walk
Departure Paro International Airport

A final Bhutanese breakfast before your guide transfers you to Paro International Airport. The departure lounge has a good selection of locally made Bhutanese crafts, textiles, and packaged goods. As your aircraft climbs above the Paro valley and banks toward the Himalayan range, the rivers you fished — clear, cold, and alive — glitter far below. You leave Bhutan with full hands: the rod bent, the fish returned, the memories kept. Safe travels.

If your flight departs late morning or afternoon, ask your guide about a final hour on the Paro Chhu before airport transfer — the early morning light on the river is some of the finest fishing light of the entire trip.

Our itineraries are always customisable — the tour can be extended to include Punakha (the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu), Bumthang (the Tang Chhu and Chamkhar Chhu), or the Mangde Chhu near Trongsa for a more comprehensive fishing expedition. Contact us to build your perfect angling programme.
