Two Very Different Pemako Experiences

Pemako runs two genuinely distinct properties in Bhutan, and this itinerary uses both. Pemako Thimphu — the reimagined former Taj Tashi — anchors the capital with 66 rooms and a fortress-inspired design. Pemako Punakha, opened in September 2023, is Bhutan's first luxury tented resort: 21 villas across 60 acres of Himalayan wilderness, each with its own temperature-controlled private pool. Both belong to the Tashi Group, Bhutan's largest conglomerate, which also owns Bhutan Airlines.

Punakha Valley puts Pemako in genuinely notable company — Amankora, COMO Uma, and Six Senses all have lodges here too, so this is one of the most concentrated luxury corridors in the entire country.

Both properties share Pemako's Lotus Realm spa concept, built on Sowa-Rigpa — traditional Bhutanese and Tibetan medicine — but the settings couldn't be more different: one a genuine city retreat within walking distance of Thimphu's landmarks, the other Bhutan's first luxury tented resort, closer in spirit to an African safari camp than a conventional hotel.

The Itinerary

Day by Day

1

Arrive Paro, Transfer to Pemako Thimphu

Paro Airport → Thimphu (≈1 hr)
Drive Time ~1 hour
Pace Arrival day

The drive into the capital, arriving at Pemako Thimphu — a fortress-inspired reimagining of the former Taj Tashi, in the heart of the city. Rooms overlook the Wang Chhu river and Tashichhodzong. A blessing ceremony with the hotel's resident monk sets the tone for the stay. Overnight at Pemako Thimphu.

Pemako's arrival blessing ceremony is a genuine touch, not a photo-op — Buddhism in Bhutan isn't performative, and this ritual is treated with real seriousness by the resident monk.
2

Thimphu Sightseeing

Thimphu — full day, city-based
Pace Full sightseeing day
Highlight Weekend Market

Tashichho Dzong, Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten, and — timing permitting — the Centenary Farmers Market. Pemako Thimphu's central location means less driving between sights than a hotel on the city's outskirts. Evening cocktails at Ara Bar or tea at Rimps Lounge. Overnight at Pemako Thimphu.

3

Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Thimphu → Dochula Pass → Pemako Punakha (≈2.5 hrs)
Drive Time ~2.5 hours
Dochula Pass 3,100 m

Dochula Pass and its 108 memorial chortens, then down into the warmer Punakha valley. Arrival at Pemako Punakha is its own experience — a prayer-flag-lined bridge crossing and traditional welcome ceremony precede check-in to your private tented villa, each with its own temperature-controlled pool. Overnight at Pemako Punakha.

The contrast between the two Pemako properties is genuinely part of the appeal — a fortress-style city hotel followed by tented wilderness luxury on the same trip.
4

Punakha Dzong & Chimi Lhakhang

Punakha sightseeing
Pace Full sightseeing day
Highlight Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong, at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, is widely considered Bhutan's most beautiful fortress. Chimi Lhakhang, the fertility temple, is a short walk through rice terraces beyond it. Dinner at Alchemy House, Pemako Punakha's Bhutanese restaurant, serving dishes like hoentay dumplings on cushioned low tables. Overnight at Pemako Punakha.

5

Wellness Day at Pemako Punakha

Lotus Realm Spa — no excursion
Pace Zero driving
Spa Lotus Realm

A full day at the resort, built around the Lotus Realm Spa's treatments — including a hot-stone bath shared with kilos of artemisia leaves, a genuinely intense but memorable Bhutanese tradition. Time by your private villa pool, a yoga session, or simply the 60 acres of Himalayan wilderness surrounding the resort. Overnight at Pemako Punakha.

The hot-stone bath here runs hotter than most spa treatments you'll have tried — worth embracing rather than requesting a milder version.
6

Return to Paro, Prepare for Tiger's Nest

Punakha → Paro (≈4 hrs)
Drive Time ~4 hours
Pace Travel day

The transfer back to Paro, positioning for tomorrow's hike. A lighter evening — Paro's handicraft shops, or simply rest after Punakha's wilderness pace. Overnight in Paro.

7

Tiger's Nest Hike & Departure

Paro Taktsang hike, then Paro Airport
Hike Time 4–5 hrs round trip
Elevation 3,120 m

A last climb after a trip defined by contrast — fortress hotel to wilderness tents, and now up to Paro Taktsang, 900 metres above the valley floor. Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure in the afternoon or evening.

Check your flight time before finalising this day's schedule — the hike needs a genuinely early start if your flight is before mid-afternoon.
