Twelve Suites, One Extraordinary Valley
Gangtey Lodge is genuinely small — just 12 Farmhouse Suites, independently run, and a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. It sits above the Phobjikha valley, one of Bhutan's most striking landscapes: a wide, glacial, U-shaped valley with almost no modern development, overlooking the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and, in winter, home to the endangered black-necked crane.
This is a genuinely remote property — roughly 5-6 hours from Paro or Thimphu by road — so this 7-day itinerary treats the journey there and back as part of a fuller western-and-central circuit, rather than a quick add-on. Log fires, slipper bathtubs, and hand-cut heated stone floors define the rooms, all designed by Mary Lou Thomson, the architect behind the property's original concept.

Arrive Paro, Transfer to Thimphu
Arrival in Paro, and a short transfer to Thimphu for the first two nights — Phobjikha itself is still three days away, so this opening stretch is deliberately unhurried: a light afternoon to adjust to the altitude before the longer journey east begins. Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu Sightseeing
Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma statue, the National Memorial Chorten, and the Motithang Takin Preserve fill the day in the capital. Overnight in Thimphu.

Thimphu to Gangtey Lodge
The long drive to Phobjikha crosses Dochula Pass and its 108 memorial chortens before descending into Wangdue and climbing again toward Gangtey. Arrival at the Lodge is genuinely dramatic — a traditional welcome with warm songs from the full team, set against sweeping views over the valley floor and the 17th-century monastery below. Overnight at Gangtey Lodge.

Phobjikha Valley & Gangtey Monastery
A visit to Gangtey Monastery itself, and a walk through the valley to meet a local farming family — helping with tasks like milking cows or tending crops, a genuine glimpse into rural Bhutanese life rather than a staged demonstration. If travelling between November and February, the valley's wintering black-necked cranes are visible from the nature trail. Overnight at Gangtey Lodge.

Wellness Day at Gangtey Lodge
A full day with nothing scheduled beyond what you choose — a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath using mineral-rich river rocks and forest herbs, indulgent massages with plant-based therapeutic oils, or simply the lodge's two stone fireplaces and floor-to-ceiling valley views. Gangtey to Paro
The return journey to Paro, retracing the route back through Wangdue and Thimphu. Overnight in Paro, positioned for the Tiger's Nest hike.

Tiger's Nest Hike & Departure
The hike to Paro Taktsang, Bhutan's most iconic monastery. An early start avoids both crowds and midday sun. Transfer to Paro International Airport for departure.
