Bhutan's Great Conservation Landscape
Sarpang district, whose largest town Gelephu sits directly on the border with the Indian state of Assam, covers 1,946 km² — 88% of it under forest cover. Three of Bhutan's protected areas converge here: Phibsoo Wildlife Sanctuary to the west, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park to the north, and Royal Manas National Park to the east, linked by a biological corridor that runs the length of the district.
Royal Manas, Bhutan's oldest national park (established 1966) and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is the headline draw: it holds the highest tiger density recorded anywhere on Earth, shelters eight different wild cat species in the same landscape, and is home to the golden langur, a species found nowhere outside the Manas river corridor.
Sarpang is also one of Bhutan's most ethnically diverse districts — Nepali, spoken by the Lhotshampa community, is the dominant language, alongside the East Bodish Kheng language in the district's northeastern reaches. And Gelephu itself is in the middle of a genuine transformation: it's the site of Gelephu Mindfulness City, Bhutan's newly created Special Administrative Region, built around the same Gross National Happiness principles that shape the rest of the country's development philosophy.

Royal Manas National Park
Bhutan's oldest national park, established in 1966 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Royal Manas holds the highest tiger density recorded anywhere in the world and harbours eight different wild cat species within the same landscape — a biological rarity globally. It's also home to the golden langur, found nowhere outside this river corridor, and over 400 recorded bird species. Combining a Sarpang Tshechu visit with a Royal Manas safari is one of the most distinctive itineraries available in southern Bhutan.
Gelephu Mindfulness City
Announced by His Majesty The King in December 2023, Gelephu Mindfulness City is Bhutan's first Special Administrative Region — a new city built around mindfulness, wellbeing, and sustainable development, with its own basic law separate from the rest of the country. A purpose-built Gelephu International Airport, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, is under construction as part of the project, targeting a full opening around 2029. In the meantime, the existing Gelephu Airport already began limited international service — a Gelephu–Kolkata route — in December 2025, making Gelephu genuinely easier to reach than it was even a year ago.
Tali Dratshang & the Sarpang Tshechu
The Sarpang Tshechu is held at Tali Dratshang in Gelephu, the winter residence of the Sarpang monastic body. Cham dances performed by the resident monks give the festival an institutional depth reflecting the long tradition of Drukpa Kagyu Buddhism in the southern foothills, and the festival closes with the unveiling of a large sacred thangka — one of the largest annual community gatherings in south-central Bhutan.
Shershong Hot Springs
Fifteen kilometres from Gelephu on the road north toward Trongsa, the Shershong hot springs are natural geothermal pools believed to have healing properties, popular with both Bhutanese and Indian visitors. A soak here is a natural, relaxing addition to a few days spent in Sarpang's subtropical heat.
Sarpang's Ethnic Diversity
Sarpang is one of Bhutan's most ethnically diverse districts. Nepali, spoken by the Lhotshampa community, is the dominant language in the south, while the East Bodish Kheng language is spoken in the district's northeastern reaches. The Sarpang Tshechu brings all these communities together at the Dratshang, making it a genuine cross-section of southern Bhutanese identity rather than a single-community celebration.
Getting to & Around Sarpang & Gelephu
Getting There
Gelephu is roughly 8–10 hours by road from Thimphu on winding mountain highways. It's also a designated overland entry/exit point from India, connected to Assam. Gelephu Airport offers domestic Drukair flights to Paro, and — as of December 2025 — a limited international route to Kolkata, with much larger international capacity planned once the new Gelephu International Airport opens.
Where to Stay
Gelephu has a small but functional range of accommodation, including The Grace Inn and Hotel Khamsang. Expect simpler, more functional lodging than western Bhutan for now — this is likely to change quickly as the Mindfulness City project develops.
Weather & Best Time
Sarpang's subtropical lowland climate is considerably warmer and more humid than the rest of Bhutan year-round. October through March brings the most comfortable, drier conditions for visiting Royal Manas, the Sarpang Tshechu, and Gelephu itself. The summer monsoon (June–September) brings heavy rain typical of the southern foothills.
Visiting Royal Manas
Royal Manas National Park is accessed from Gelephu and requires advance park permits, arranged through your tour operator. Given the park's remarkable tiger density and biodiversity, this is one of the best wildlife-focused additions to a southern Bhutan itinerary, best planned with enough lead time to arrange permits and a knowledgeable guide.
