The Thimphu Tshechu is the largest and most accessible of Bhutan's major festivals — held over three days at Tashichho Dzong, the seat of the Royal Government and the central monastery of the capital. It is the single greatest gathering of Bhutanese people in traditional dress anywhere in the country, and the Cham mask dances performed in the dzong courtyard draw participants and observers from every district in Bhutan. For visitors, it is the most convenient major Tshechu to attend — Thimphu has the country's best accommodation, easiest airport connections, and widest range of restaurants and facilities.

The festival takes place in September or October — exact dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar (2026: 21–23 September). September is the tail end of monsoon and the beginning of Bhutan's finest travel season: the air is washed clean, the valleys are still green from summer rain, and the Himalayan peaks begin appearing with increasing clarity. The Thimphu Tshechu coincides perfectly with the transition into autumn — arguably Bhutan's best travel month.

This 7-day tour is built around the festival, combining it with the essential western Bhutan circuit — the Punakha Valley and Dzong, and the Tiger's Nest hike on the final full day in Paro. Accommodation throughout is in Bhutan's finest properties — this is a tour designed for those who want to experience the culture without compromise on comfort.
