Overview
The Paro Tshechu is one of Bhutan's most celebrated annual festivals, held over five days at Rinpung Dzong — the Fortress of the Heap of Jewels — in the Paro Valley. The festival honours Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), the 8th-century Indian master who brought Vajrayana Buddhism to Bhutan, and is considered one of the most sacred events in the Bhutanese calendar. Every Bhutanese family in Paro attends, dressed in their finest traditional clothes — the women in silk kiras, the men in ghos. The courtyard fills with colour, sound, and deep collective devotion.
The festival's defining moment is the Thongdrel — a vast sacred scroll painting of Guru Rinpoche, unrolled only once a year at dawn on the final morning before the sun hits it. "Thongdrel" means liberation through sight: simply seeing the Thongdrel is believed to cleanse the viewer of negative karma. Thousands gather before dawn in the courtyard in complete silence, waiting. The moment the scroll unfurls down the face of the dzong is one of the most extraordinary things a visitor can witness anywhere in Asia.
This 7-day tour is built around the Paro Tshechu — typically late March or early April, exact dates set by the Bhutanese lunar calendar (2026: 29 March – 2 April). It combines the festival with the essential western Bhutan circuit: Thimphu's capital sights, the Punakha Valley, and the Tiger's Nest hike on the final full day.

After a full day of exploration, relax with an overnight stay in Paro.
Start with an early morning drive to Paro Rinpung Dzong to witness the unveiling of the Thongdrol — a large, intricately crafted religious thangka depicting Guru Rinpoche. The term "Thongdrol" translates to "liberation upon seeing" or "instant enlightenment through viewing" — one of the most sacred moments in the Bhutanese calendar.
Afterwards, take a scenic one-hour drive to Thimphu, visiting Tachogang Lhakhang and crossing an ancient iron suspension bridge along the way. Explore a local craft bazaar to discover unique Bhutanese handicrafts before settling in for an overnight stay in Thimphu.
Embark on a full-day excursion through Thimphu Valley, beginning at the Memorial Chorten, then heading to Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) for views of the 51.5-metre Shakyamuni Buddha statue and panoramic valley views.
Continue to the Simply Bhutan Museum, the Takin Preserve, and Zorig Chusum — the School of 13 Traditional Arts and Crafts. Continue to the Sangchen Dorji Lhendrup Nunnery for a chance to interact with resident nuns and learn about their spiritual dedication before arriving in Punakha for the night.
Start with a 30-minute hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Stupa, surrounded by stunning mountain views. Visit the iconic Punakha Dzong — an architectural masterpiece at the confluence of two rivers — then cross Bhutan's longest suspension bridge spanning 160 metres.
Pay a visit to Chimi Lhakhang, the renowned Fertility Temple. In the afternoon, take a three-hour drive to Paro for a relaxing overnight stay.
