From Johannesburg or Cape Town, the standard routing is Emirates to Dubai (approximately 8–9 hours), then Druk Air's twice-weekly Dubai–Paro service (via a scheduled Delhi stop, approximately 6-7.5 hours depending on direction). This is currently the most practical gateway for South African travellers, since it avoids the longer routings via Southeast Asia. Given the total journey length, we recommend 12–16 days in Bhutan.
Found Bhutan is a licensed local agency based in Thimphu. South African travellers bring an easy adaptability to remote, off-grid destinations, having grown up close to genuine wilderness themselves. ZAR-equivalent quotes are available on request.
Visa & Entry for

All international visitors to Bhutan — except Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals — must obtain a visa before travelling. The visa is applied through your licensed Bhutanese tour operator (Found Bhutan), costs USD 40 per person, and takes approximately 5–10 working days. Once approved, a visa clearance letter is emailed to you before departure.
Documents required: Valid South African passport with at least 6 months validity. Your Found Bhutan visa clearance letter. South African passport holders do not require a transit visa for the airside Dubai connection; if routing via Delhi or Kolkata on separate tickets, check Indian transit visa requirements in advance.
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night — a Government of Bhutan levy. Included in all Found Bhutan packages.

Dubai is currently the most reliable gateway for South African travellers, since Emirates flies direct from all three major South African cities.
