Bhutan Tour
from the USA
The world's last great Himalayan kingdom — a journey unlike any other.
Bhutan Tour from
the USA
For American travellers, Bhutan represents one of the last truly extraordinary journeys on earth — a carbon-negative Himalayan kingdom where happiness is national policy, monasteries cling to cliff faces, and a way of life unchanged for centuries still flourishes. Coming from the USA, Bhutan rewards the long-haul flight with an experience that simply cannot be replicated anywhere closer to home.
Found Bhutan is a licensed local agency based in Thimphu. We handle every detail of your trip — visa, permits, accommodation, guides, vehicles, and meals — so you arrive in Bhutan with nothing to arrange and everything to enjoy. Our guides are born-and-raised Bhutanese who bring an inside perspective that no international operator can match.
Given the travel time from the USA, we recommend a minimum of 7 nights to do Bhutan justice. Many American visitors extend to 10 or 14 days to explore the deeper east of the country. We'll help you make the most of every day.
Visa & Entry for
US Citizens
Bhutan does not issue visas through embassies or online in advance for most nationalities including the USA. Instead, your visa is issued on arrival at Paro International Airport, subject to confirmation of your booking through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. When you book through Found Bhutan, we send you a visa clearance letter before you travel — this is presented to the airline at check-in and to immigration on arrival.
Documents required: Valid US passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your travel dates. A passport-size photograph. Your Found Bhutan visa clearance letter (we provide this).
Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): USD 100 per person per night. This is a Government of Bhutan levy that funds free education, free healthcare, and environmental conservation across the kingdom. It is not a service charge — it is a contribution to one of the world's most admirable development models. Found Bhutan includes the SDF transparently in all package quotes.
Flights to Bhutan
from the USA
There are no direct flights from the USA to Bhutan. All flights to Paro International Airport connect through Asian hub cities. The most common and efficient routing options for American travellers are via Bangkok, Delhi, or Singapore — all well-served from major US airports by multiple airlines.
Most popular US–Bhutan routing. Bangkok has excellent onward connections to Paro via Bangkok Airways codeshare with Druk Air.
Strong option if combining with an India trip. Delhi has the most frequent onward connections to Paro.
Excellent Singapore Airlines connections from many US cities. Smooth transit at Changi Airport.
Total Travel Time from USA
Expect 20–28 hours of total travel time from most US cities, including layovers. We recommend building in a one-night stopover in Bangkok, Delhi, or Singapore on the way out — this breaks the journey comfortably and lets you arrive in Bhutan rested. Found Bhutan can help arrange your stopover accommodation on request.
Why American Travellers
Choose Bhutan
One of the World's Last True Wildernesses
Over 70% of Bhutan is forested. No billboards, no fast food chains, no mass tourism infrastructure. If you're searching for somewhere genuinely untouched, Bhutan is it.
Himalayan Scale Unlike Anywhere Else
Bhutan sits in the eastern Himalayas with peaks above 7,000m visible from the valley floors. The landscape shifts from subtropical jungle to snow-capped alpine within a single drive.
A Living Buddhist Civilisation
Buddhism isn't a museum exhibit in Bhutan — it is daily life. Monks chant at dawn, prayer flags snap in mountain passes, and festivals draw entire communities together in ancient ritual.
Tiger's Nest — A Once-in-a-Lifetime Trek
The Paro Taktsang monastery, perched 900m above the valley on a sheer cliff face, is unlike any other sacred site on earth. No photo captures it. It demands the journey.
The World's Only Carbon-Negative Country
Bhutan absorbs more carbon than it produces. Your visit directly funds the preservation of this extraordinary ecological model. Few travel experiences carry this kind of meaning.
Genuine Exclusivity
The SDF model limits visitor numbers and ensures Bhutan never becomes a mass-market destination. American travellers who value authentic, uncrowded experiences find Bhutan uniquely rewarding.
World-Class Luxury Lodges
Six Senses, Amankora, Uma by COMO — the world's most celebrated boutique hotel brands operate in Bhutan. The quality of accommodation rivals anywhere on earth, set against extraordinary scenery.
Photography Unmatched Anywhere in Asia
Festival mask dances, Dzong fortresses at dawn, black-necked cranes in winter mist — Bhutan rewards serious photographers with access that tour groups from other destinations simply don't get.

Sample 7-Day
Itinerary
- Arrival at Paro Airport: Your Found Bhutan guide meets you on arrival. The descent into Paro — weaving between Himalayan peaks — is one of the most dramatic landings in commercial aviation.
- Rinpung Dzong: After settling in, visit Paro's magnificent 17th-century fortress-monastery overlooking the valley — an introduction to the scale and beauty of Bhutanese architecture.
- Welcome Dinner: A traditional Bhutanese dinner at your lodge. Try Ema Datshi (Bhutan's national dish of chilli and cheese) and Hoentay (buckwheat dumplings) — flavours you won't find anywhere else on earth.
- Buddha Dordenma: The giant gilded Buddha overlooking Thimphu — one of the largest in the world. Visit at sunrise for extraordinary light and no crowds.
- Tashichho Dzong: Bhutan's seat of government — a stunning whitewashed fortress at the edge of the Wang Chhu River, best visited late afternoon when monks return from prayer.
- National Institute for Zorig Chusum: Watch students training in the 13 traditional arts of Bhutan — thangka painting, wood carving, weaving, and lacquerwork. A window into a living artistic tradition.
- Weekend Market: If visiting Friday to Sunday, Thimphu's open-air market is unmissable — the full colour and energy of Bhutanese daily life in one place.
- Dochula Pass (3,100m): Drive over the pass with its 108 memorial chortens and, on clear days, an unbroken panorama of the eastern Himalayan range including Gangkar Puensum — the world's highest unclimbed peak.
- Punakha Dzong: Built at the confluence of two rivers, Punakha Dzong is the most photographed building in Bhutan. The ancient wooden suspension bridge beside it offers the finest vantage point.
- Chimi Lhakhang: The Fertility Temple — a short walk through golden rice paddies — where local families seek blessings.
- River Rafting (Optional): A gentle raft on the Mo Chhu River past valley walls and terraced fields — one of the most scenic afternoon activities in Bhutan.
- Gangtey Monastery: One of Bhutan's most important Nyingmapa monasteries, perched on a ridge above the valley — a place of exceptional peace and architectural beauty.
- Nature Walk: A gentle 3km walk through the valley floor, past traditional farmhouses, marshland, and birch forest. In winter (October–March), endangered black-necked cranes migrate here from Tibet.
- Black-Necked Crane Centre: Learn about Bhutan's internationally acclaimed conservation programme for one of the world's rarest cranes — revered in Bhutanese Buddhist culture.
- Drive back to Paro: Return from Phobjikha through the changing valley landscapes — a scenic half-day drive through some of Bhutan's most beautiful countryside.
- Kyichu Lhakhang: One of the oldest and most sacred temples in Bhutan, built in the 7th century. Intimate, atmospheric, and filled with the scent of juniper incense and butter lamps.
- Paro Town Walk & Shopping: The best selection of Bhutanese handicrafts in the country — textiles, wooden masks, thangka paintings, and locally made cheese.
- Traditional Hot Stone Bath: A dotsho — the ancient Bhutanese hot stone bath heated with river stones and local medicinal herbs. The perfect preparation for tomorrow's big trek.
- Tiger's Nest Trek: Start early for the 4-hour round trek through blue pine forest to Paro Taktsang — the monastery perched 900m above the valley on a sheer cliff face. One of the great treks of Asia.
- Taktsang Monastery: Four sacred temples filled with murals, butter lamps, and the sound of chanting. The view back down the valley from the monastery terrace is among the finest anywhere in Asia.
- Picnic Lunch on the Trail: A packed lunch at the viewpoint halfway — with Tiger's Nest framed perfectly across the gorge. One of the great lunch spots on earth.
- Farewell Dinner: A final dinner in Paro celebrating the journey — traditional Bhutanese cuisine, local ara rice wine, and stories with your guide.
- Morning at Leisure: A final walk through Paro, last-minute shopping for handicrafts, or simply breakfast on the lodge terrace with the valley below.
- Transfer to Paro Airport: Your Found Bhutan guide will be with you until departure. The flight out of Paro — the Himalayas visible from your window — is a final, breathtaking farewell.
- Until next time: Most American visitors start planning their return before they've even landed. Bhutan has that effect.
Given the distance from the USA, we recommend extending to 10 days. This allows a second night in Punakha, a day in Haa Valley, and a more relaxed Tiger's Nest experience. Ask us about our extended itineraries.
